IMPORT reflects the crushing weight of our times. Built from over a quarter of a mile of reed fencing spun around a square steel pipe. Sheets of one-dollar bills are wrapped inside each layer, visible from the edges and the final massive circumference. The artist's maternal grandparents began a small business importing reed and bamboo products from the Orient over sixty years ago. IMPORT examines the spiraling trade deficit in the United States. Dependence on fossil fuels has sustained an imbalance for the food and technology our country exports to the world. |
